Company History

Founded by Robert Edwards and David Rousseau in 1872, Edwards Signaling has been a pioneer in electrical innovation for over 150 years. From humble beginnings in a jewelry store basement — to becoming the global leader in signaling and alarm technologies — our legacy is built on invention, reliability and exceptional service.

2001 - Present:

Modern Era

  • Today: Headquartered in Mebane, NC, Edwards Signaling continues to innovate with products that trace their lineage to the earliest days of electrical signaling
  • 2024: Joined Lone Star Financial Group, becoming part of the Kidde Global Solutions family
  • 2020: Acquired by Carrier
  • 2010: Becomes part of UTC Fire & Security under United Technologies
  • 2005: Acquired by GE and integrated into GE Security

1951 - 2000:

Technological Advancements

  • Introduction of tear-drop fire alarm stations & nurse call systems
  • 1962: Becomes part of General Signal Corporation
  • Systems installed at Cape Kennedy, Harvard and JFK Center
  • Launch of Adaptatone programmable signals & piezo-electric technology
  • Expansion into industrial strobes & advanced smoke detectors

1901 - 1950:

National Recognition

  • 1903: NYSE bell installed
  • Products used in the Holland Tunnel and the White House
  • Canadian operations launched
  • Fire and signaling systems deployed in major landmarks like Rockefeller Center

1881 - 1900:

Innovation & Expansion

  • Patents secured for electric bells, annunciators, gas lighters and door openers
  • 1884: Featured at the first U.S. electrical show
  • Product line expands to clocks, program systems and coils

1872 - 1880:

Early Beginnings

  • 1880: Operations move to a dedicated three-story plant
  • 1873: Adam Lungen joins; the electric doorbell and burglar alarm are developed
  • 1872: Company founded to explore electricity and produce battery-operated gas-fixture igniters
